TRU SKOOL REUNION

Back in 1998, a guy named DJ Underdog had an idea – to create an event where all of the elements of hip hop could be represented in a way that would bring the rappers, the gangsters, the graff heads, the breakers, the DJs, the poets and the singers together under one roof every week. He called it “Tru Skool“. It worked. Really, really well. As host for several years, I was blessed enough to be a part of the birth and growth of Tru Skool, which saw the birth and growth of several artists: Flex Matthews, Uptown XO, Shambhala, Ardamus, Damu, Rosetta Stoned, DJ Earth One, Culta Cypha, DJ Soyo, myself and so many more…

In the words of Head-Roc “Tru Skool was the only shit happening in DC at the height of gentrification”. Its true. While the city swept through and shut down nearly every performance venue there was on historic U St and the surrounding areas, Tru Skool adapted, moving from Bin Tumani where we started, to Cafe Mowanaj, to Capitol City Records, just to name a few. We were everywhere, with everybody. And it was LOVE. It still is. These are the years that made me…

This Thursday 4-14, come out to Lounge of 3 – 1013 U St. NW and join us for the Tru Skool Reunion. The artists who started there have all gone on to have successful careers. I’m proud to be a part of that graduating class. Come see how far we’ve come.

1, 2, 3… Peace

See you there!

WMC 2011

Well its been a few days since i got back from Miami and I had to let my brain gel back together first before I could write this post…

But this year’s WMC was really something else. For me, having only been involved in House for a few years through DJ AB Logic and Axiom of the Hoodfellas, I finally felt like I was part of the family this year. I played something like 15 gigs! Lol. “Epic” doesn’t even begin to describe it. Highlights for me were playing the Beach Plaza Hotel with Tommy Largo, AB Logic & J.C. Disko. We created a moment that I nor anyone who was there will ever forget and that was just the beginning. The Guesthouse parties were totally sick. Probably one of the most insane moments was watching Mes, Sneak, Farina and Doc Martin kill it at club Eve from 2am to 10am. The sun came up and the party kept going – immaculate. I played a smash set with Australia’s Jeremy Joshua that was the start of a great relationship. Several major highlights came from my downtempo and house sets with Tommy Largo. Notably at the Carlton Hotel for Sutra Sounds. This by far was one of my most memorable experiences. It was as if the stars aligned and the gods of House were shining on us. An amazing night. Making friends and music plans with awesome Aussies like Sonny Fodera was more than icing on the cake.

I rocked my all white Super Debs from Heyday Footwear, as well as my red Shift RS’s and my grey Shift Concepts – Heyday had Miami on SMASH! It was lovely to turn heads in the city where heads don’t turn much. My daytime-nighttime purple Carerras went with all my outfits, it was a good fashion week for the kid lol. OH and the “Guns & Doves” and “Kill Your Genre” tees are an absolute WIN. New gear coming soon!!

Finally, just as I thought it couldnt get any better, the UGH Hangover Party on sunday at D’vine Lounge thrown by AB Logic and my people, with special guests Jonn Hawley, Davidson Ospina and Oscar P to name a few was so ridiculously incredible that I get misty eyed everytime I think of it.

If there was one song to sum up last year’s WMC it was Jonn Hawley’s “Electric Lush”. This year for me it was DJ Spinna’s remix of Shaun Escoffery’s “Days Like This”. I met so many amazing people, labels and DJs, I will NEVER forget WMC 2011. Every day I said the same thing to myself, “I love days like this, yeah…”

Note:
I def got mad emo hangin with all you House music heads for a week. Hahaha Back to the gully…

I’m like a young Marvin in his Hey(day)

What’s poppin y’all? Well if you’ve been following my tweets recently you know that an exciting partnership has just taken place between your’s truly and an infinitely awesome, high-fashion footwear company. Namely, Heyday Footwear

Boston-based model, fashionista and music industry consultant, Jules Renae, who was recently cast as a lead in my upcoming video for “Time”, knew about my fetish for nu-fashion hightop footwear and thought that Heyday and I would be a good fit. She couldn’t have been more right. Jules introduced me to Darin Hager, Design Guru and Chief Everything Officer at Heyday Footwear. After a few tweets and a phonecall, the deal was sealed. A few days later, the official announcement was made on Heyday’s blog
Heyday Footwear newest Brand Ambassador Born Infinite is the very embodiment of Heyday Footwear Shoe Math design process…different trends mixed together to create something entirely new and original…
If there was ever a match made in heaven, this is it. I mean, look at these kicks…

Catch me rockin these in my next video

Catch me in a pair of all-white Heyday Super Shifts in the upcoming video for my single Memory Lane. Am I the first rapper in my city with a shoe deal? The answer is “yes”. Shoutout to Heyday Footwear. G&D wins again. Let’s go.
